Canine Hydrotherapy at Doodley Dogs

Hydrotherapy has long been recognised as an effective method of healing for both humans and animals. As a non-weight bearing therapy, the act of swimming or even light stretching movements can allow the healing process to commence in the early post-operative or post-injury stages. Treatment carried out within the safe confines of warm pool water, with its hydrostatic pressure, allows a wide range of limb movements and can also alleviate pain with its analgesic effect. This state of comfort and absence of pain allows the dog to move more naturally, as the water aids circulation and helps to reduce inflammation, thereby allowing the animal to relax. As these exercises continue, muscles become toned and damaged tissue is repaired.

In addition to the physical benefits, the animal’s mental state improves as it realises that it is able to move about, pain-free and in a safe environment – particularly if there has been previous trauma as a result of injury or surgery.

Leon Henderson-Rood is a fully-qualified and NARCH (National Association of Canine Hydrotherapists) registered Canine Hydrotherapist and, as such, he realises the importance of appropriate treatment for individual dogs within his care. He realised his true vocation in life the day he helped a dog with paralysis to walk on its hind legs properly – and he hasn’t looked back.
